SOUTHEND PIER
SUPPLY & FIT: SOUTHEND PIER
Battling against inclement weather and the tide, the LFS team drew on decades of experience in passive fire protection to complete a challenging, but vital supply and fit scope of work at the Essex landmark.
Commencing in November 2023, the project scope included the replacement of seven internal door sets at Southend Pier, as well as the reinforcement and replacement of the window surrounds within the Grade II listed architecture.
Originally designed by renowned civil engineer James Brunlees, the Pier boasts original crittal windows, which, through decades of exposure to the elements, required improvement works to meet the Council’s high standards of health and safety.
For this scope of work, LFS carried out the following:
-
Removal of the crittal windows
-
Replacement of the sole plates
-
Replacement of the mullions
-
Reinstallation of the original crittal windows
During this phase of the project, timing was paramount, as the team had to organise their schedule taking into consideration tide times and the working hours of those utilising the offices only reachable via the walkway LFS were working in.
By removing the windows the walkway became open to the elements, meaning timely replacement and reinstallation was critical to avoid exposing the internal structure, and the people within, to the harsh North Sea.
In addition to the above scope of work, Clive Graham Associates contracted LFS to install seven door sets, including Q-Mark FD30 fire doors on the first and ground floor electrical risers. FD30 fire doors are internal doors which give around 30 minutes of fire protection.
